Conrad Murray asks judge for a court-appointed attorney to appeal his involuntary manslaughter conviction.

<P>Just weeks after being sent to jail for <a href="/news/articles/1675062/conrad-murray-sentence.jhtml">four years</a> following a conviction on a felony involuntary manslaughter charge in the death of <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml" target="_blank">Michael Jackson</a>, cardiologist Conrad Murray is throwing himself on the mercy of the court. The doctor had been slated to earn up to $150,000 a month to act as Jackson's personal physician before the pop icon's death in June 2009 from an overdose of the Murray-administered surgical anesthetic propofol. But on Tuesday <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/conrad_murray_in_shackles_asks/280479" target="_blank"><I>E! News</I></a> reported that Murray filed a <a href="/news/articles/1675343/conrad-murray-conviction-appeal.jhtml">notice of appeal</a> in Los Angeles Superior Court in which he claimed that he is "indigent and respectfully requests the appointment of counsel on appeal." Murray, 58, is planning to appeal both his conviction and his sentence, but has not yet filed papers with the California Appeals Court. He had hired two lawyers to handle his manslaughter case, but is now seeking attorneys with appeal experience. One of those former lawyers, J. Michael Flanagan, told E! that he was shocked at how his client is being treated in jail. "It is crazy and unbelievable how [the sheriffs] are treating" Murray in jail, said Flanagan, who claimed he waited over an hour to see Murray, who was brought out in handcuffs and leg chains. Flanagan was further shocked to see Murray handcuffed to the table for their meeting, something the lawyer said he'd never seen before in the case of a low-level, non-violent offender. Charles Peckham, who is handling civil cases against Murray, told the <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/doctor-convicted-in-michael-jacksons-death-seeking-court-paid-attorney-for-appeal/2011/12/13/gIQAHIYGsO_story.html" target="_blank"><I>Associated Press</I></a> that his client is under tight security and isolation that is more intense than other inmates at the Los Angeles Men's Central Jail. "Treating him like Hannibal Lecter is offensive," said Peckham. "This man who saved lives made a mistake, and they're going to [make] him pay like a mass-murderer." Sheriff's officials defended the tight security, saying it was for Murray's safety.</p>

Voting off arrogant attorney Matt Quinlan was the men's best option, argues former 'Survivor' player Rob Cesternino.
By Josh Wigler

The men of "Survivor: One World" thought they had everything under control. They were wrong.
After a seemingly inescapable two-week losing streak, the female-populated Salani tribe bounced back big in the latest episode of "Survivor" with two straight challenge wins, sending the boys of Manolo to tribal council for the very first time. Before the vote, straight-shooting attorney Matt Quinlan, 33, tried to convince elder statesman Troy "Troyzan" Robertson, 50, to abandon his ragtag allies and join his cause. Matt represents the "roosters" of Manolo, he arrogantly argued, while Troy was siding with the less-than-equal "chickens." One confusing analogy and nine votes later, it was cocky rooster Matt who found his goose cooked.
With two straight losses under their belts, can Manolo reclaim their dominance in this game? Was there anything Matt could have done differently? Has momentum finally shifted in the women's favor? Once again, MTV News teamed up with longtime "Survivor" commentator and two-time player Rob Cesternino to tackle these questions and more.
MTV: Rob, let's start with the most important question: Are you a rooster or a chicken?
Rob Cesternino: Am I a rooster or a chicken? [Laughs] You know, I had never heard the chicken versus rooster analogy being made on "Survivor." Usually there are roosters and chickens on "Survivor," but you don't want to be either one of them — they get eaten! But which one was which: Was Matt the rooster, and the chickens killed the rooster? Then I would want to be a chicken. Chickens are where you want to be: Let everyone else think they're the rooster!
MTV: This week, it was the men's turn to collapse, and Matt's time to go. I had a feeling this guy wasn't long for "Survivor" pretty much from the first time he opened his mouth -- he was isolating himself very early on, not just towards the women, but even within his own tribe. What do you think Matt's undoing was? What was his fatal flaw?
Cesternino: You never want to come into "Survivor" and play the game too hard, too fast. "Survivor," "Big Brother," any of these reality shows, they're marathons. You can't just come in and say, "This is how it's going, and this is how it's going to be." That's kind of what Matt did from the get-go in this game. He just rubbed too many people the wrong way. In this season, when their tribe is all men, the things that he brought to the table — leadership, physical strength — the men already have that in spades. They don't need any more physical strength. A team of all men can get rid of a strapping guy in their first vote and not miss a beat, whereas in a regular season, you can't lose a guy like that; you need him for challenges.
MTV: Throughout the end of the episode, it seemed like a toss-up between Matt and Bill, who played a big role in losing the challenge for Manolo. Do you think the tribe made the right choice, choosing Matt over Bill?
Cesternino: I do. I think it makes sense to get rid of Matt early on because he's the one organizing counter-alliances, and you should cut off the head of the snake. That being said, I think Bill is the bigger threat to go further in the game. If you can get past the weird surfer dude stuff he's doing, I think he's a likeable guy — unless you're Colton. I think Bill can make friends along the way, even though he's not in the best position right now.
MTV: But Bill was acting pretty weird at tribal council. He seemed way too eager to get himself voted out of the game.
Cesternino: I wonder if maybe Bill was overcompensating. He knew he was a possibility to go, so he overplayed it: "I'm so safe and secure right now, I'm having such a great time." I wonder if maybe some of that was acting. "I'm not nervous, I'm not freaking out like Matt; I'm being calm. I'm not a threat!"
MTV: As it stands, the rooster alliance is pretty thin. They don't have the numbers, not that they ever did. The dominant alliance on the tribe now is Troy and the Average Joes, as they were dubbed by Matt last night. Do you like this group? It's very early still, but what do your instincts tell you: Is this a solid "Survivor" alliance?
Cesternino: I like the game that Troyzan is playing. I think he's emerged as a good leader of the Average Joes. Ideally, every "Survivor" player should want to be the leader of an average joe alliance. These are average people, not spectacular, and they're not looking to overthrow their leaders; they're not power-hungry. They're just a bunch of average joes! I feel like you wouldn't want to be in an alliance of five "Survivor" superstars, because they would all want to vote you out so they can keep being "Survivor" superstars. Take your average joes and get to the end.
The problem with Troyzan is that the other leader of the Average Joe alliance is Colton, who does seem power-hungry, and he could butt heads with Troyzan over who's calling shots for this team. They actually already did a little bit in this episode: Troyzan wanted Matt out, but Colton wanted to vote Bill. Colton did not get his way, of course. But it was really unclear: What did Bill do that was so bad to make Colton hate him so much? He's saying Bill should kill himself, he calls Bill "ghetto trash." That's so unnecessary! It's not just being offensive; what did Bill do? Sure, his voice might be annoying, but that hardly seems grounds for racial epithets and telling him to kill himself!
MTV: Well, aside from being pretty hateful in this episode, it does feel like Colton's turned things around a little bit. I still don't think he's winning material, but he's playing a game now that could take him a lot deeper than I, at least, had initially imagined.
Cesternino: I think Colton is the "Survivor" version of Newt Gingrich. Yes, he has conservative values, and yes, many people have written him off, but somehow he's still in the mix of this thing. But at the end of the day, we all know that he just can't win. For Colton, sure, things are looking OK now. But somebody playing the game like Colton has never won the game. At best, he goes to the end and gets zero votes. It makes very exciting television along the way, but it's a game that's impossible to win.
MTV: The men are the big story this week. There's almost nothing to say about the women other than, good on them! They have two challenges under their belt. Maybe they're getting along a bit better, too. Do you think they're on the rebound, or was this just good luck this week?
Cesternino: They did get their act together! They've won a couple of challenges, and now the momentum has seemingly shifted in the game. But I think the women are being unreasonable regarding their negotiating with the men. They never negotiate in good faith with the men. They want everything and they want to give up nothing. This is why we don't negotiate with terrorists! [Laughs] They take and they take and they take, but you can't hold them to their word. They want fire, they want embers, but they just won't give the men a straight answer on whether they can use their boat! There's just no trust right now between the two tribes. There's no need for that. Ultimately, these tribes are going to merge, the teams are going to be swapped, and you will have to have relationships with these people. Outside of Colton, seemingly nobody has been able to bridge the intertribal gender lines.
MTV: Here's what's interested me most this season: On paper, the concept of "One World" should theoretically bring these pre-merged tribes closer together in a way that we've never seen on this show before. Instead, it feels like the rivalry and competition between two tribes has never been this heated and this heightened this early on. There's so much bitterness between these two tribes.
Cesternino: That's a good point. I think it might have been counterintuitive to the "One World" twist to make it men versus women, because people are so wrapped up in men versus women that they're afraid to cross that tribal divide. If it was just red team versus blue team, the only difference is a different-colored buff, it wouldn't be a big deal. But because there's such a line in the sand here, I wonder if it almost defeated the purpose of having them live on the same beach. If there is a tribe switch in the future, it'll be interesting to see who will be able to work well with people from the other tribe.
MTV: Closing out as we normally do, who did well this week? Who's looking good right now?
Cesternino: Someone who did well this week was Troyzan. I think he's in a very good position in the tribe. He not only emerged as the leader of the Average Joes, he was also the guy that Matt came to as sort of a potential "rooster." It's good that he was approachable; he didn't get in Matt's face and be confrontational, à la Colton. Troy just said, "Sure, that sounds good!" But to us at home, he said, "I don't want to work with Matt! I'd never work with Matt! I want to vote him out!" And that's exactly what he did. You don't want to have confrontations with people on "Survivor." You just want to agree with every proposal that comes your way. "Sure, that sounds like a great idea!" Then you carry out your own business. I thought Troyzan did a very good job at that.

Glitter-heavy pop star tells MTV News she's going for 'balls-out, irreverent rock and roll.'
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias
<P><a href="/music/artist/_kesha_/artist.jhtml">Ke$ha</a>'s already got the face paint down pat, and, during recent live sets, she's even taken to <a href="http://www.popeater.com/2011/03/17/kesha-drinks-blood-during-performance" target="_blank">guzzling blood</a> out of a human heart, so it should come as no surprise that, on her upcoming album, the pop star is taking things back to the most <i>theatrical</i> era of rock: the prop-heavy, arena-spanning heyday of the 1970s. Ke$h revealed her plans over the weekend in Los Angeles, on the red carpet of KIIS FM's annual <a href="/news/articles/1663909/wango-tango-britney-spears-kesha.jhtml">Wango Tango</a> concert, where she told MTV News that the follow-up to her breakout <i>Animal</i> album (and, we suppose, <a href="/news/articles/1652714/kehas-cannibal-a-cheat-sheet.jhtml"><i>Cannibal</i></a> too) would be heavy on hard riffs and light on pretty much <i>everything</i> else. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:652875" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "The next album ... I've been working on writing on the road, but as far as a sound, I just know it's gonna be balls-out, irreverent rock and roll," she said. "I've been pretty much in this '70s rock and roll kick and I just want to capture some of the true essence of what rock and roll is, and that's just irreverence and sexiness and fun and not giving a f---, so we'll definitely put a bit of rock and roll in it." So, does that mean that fans can expect the likes of Alice Cooper or Peter Frampton to show up on her new album? Perhaps. Because while Ke$ha's new album is still a ways off, she's already begun calling in favors, hoping to line up a killer collabo for the new disc. "I'm trying, trust me," she laughed. "I really would love to connect with one of my idols, I mean, that's my dream. I'm working on it." <i>What do you think of Ke$ha going rock for her next album? Tell us in the comments!</i></p>

I'm here! I'm here! And I saw my first gang-banger get arrested yesterday so I feel like a total Angeleno.

I'm getting ready to go to the gym (again, like a total Angeleno!) so I will update later about my run-ins with Alexander Skarsgard, Pauly Shore, and Jeremy or Jason London (I'm not sure which one it was and seeing if I could force him to do drugs to find out seemed unfair. Besides, as it turned out, he was telling the truth?)
Anyhoo, I've got a lot to tell you about gardening! (Did you know if you get dirt wet it turns into mud? Yuck.)
And bumpers! (They don't bump off anything... they go, "Scraaaaaaaatch!")
And there's probably more but, again, I have to go because I have to get to the gym!

'It's perfect for this private couple,' one celebrity expert tells MTV News of B's low-key NYC outing.

Beyonce leaves 40/40 Club in New York City

<P>It was only a month ago that fans were wondering when the first images of new mom <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyoncé</a> might hit the Net. On Monday night, those questions were answered. Just four weeks after giving birth to daughter <a href="/news/articles/1677033/blue-ivy-beyonce-jay-z-leaves-hospital.jhtml">Blue Ivy</a>, B was back on the scene to celebrate hubby <a href="/news/articles/1678669/jay-z-carnegie-hall.jhtml">Jay-Z's first show at Carnegie Hall</a>. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:731725" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Wearing a form-fitting red dress, she hit up a post-show party held at Jay's 40/40 Club in New York City. And while <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/02/07/beyonce-carnegie-hall-jay-z-show">Beyoncé could have premiered</a> her <a href="/news/articles/1678670/beyonce-post-baby-appearance-jay-z.jhtml">post-baby body</a> on a splashy red carpet, celebrity experts note that the more understated move is very B. "It's perfect for this private couple. She didn't make a big deal walking a red carpet at an award show or posing on the cover of a magazine," Huffington Post celebrity columnist Rob Shuter told MTV News on Tuesday (February 7). "Beyoncé made it as low-key an event as possible and at the same time plugged her husband's club." <b><a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/02/08/beyonce-photos-carnegie-hall-night-two/">Check out more photos from B's night out!</a></b> For the appearance, Beyoncé was decked out in a fiery-red Temperley London dress, Christian Louboutin heels and an Alexander McQueen clutch. While that may sound very glam, another expert was surprised by just how modest the look actually was. "Beyoncé looks amazing in her first post-baby appearance. Even thought it made sense for her to make her debut last night to show her support for her husband and the charity his concert benefited, her outfit was fairly simple," celebrity editor <a href="http://gossipdavid.com" target="_blank">David Caplan</a> said. "I expected her to make her post-baby debut at a really glitzy event or awards show, like maybe the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/grammys">Grammys</a>, in a gorgeous gown and really steal the show. But clearly she wanted to be seen, since she even posted photos of herself right away on her website, which stars don't typically do — they'll just let the media pick up and run the photos." </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:724228.id:1676907" width="240" height="211"></div><p> So, will B and Jay play it just as cool when it comes to releasing the first shot of their newborn? "It will be a [paparazzi] shot taken on the beach or when the couple is on vacation," Shuter predicted. "They won't reveal the baby to get a [magazine] cover like Bethenny [Frankel] or those other reality stars." Caplan also proposed that a baby photo will probably leak. "As for when will we see baby Blue, I wouldn't be surprised if some sort of grainy-looking paparazzi photo emerges," he said. "Those photographers are very crafty, even if Beyoncé and Jay-Z think they're doing all they can to keep Blue away from photographers. But ultimately, I think you can expect to see her baby photos in a magazine pictorial, and that will be Blue's introduction to the world. That's the real reveal people want to see." <i>Are you looking forward to the first photos of Blue Ivy? Tell us on our <a href="http://www.facebook.com/mtvnews" target="_blank">Facebook</a> page!</i></p>

Go see Captain America this weekend! Support our Colin!

I went to the premiere on Tuesday and it was the coolest thing ever. First, the movie is AMAZING and Chris Evans is a superstar. Second, there were so many damn people there it was insane. I have been to movie premieres in New York before and they were nothing like this. I mean, they closed down Hollywood Boulevard. I would've taken photos to show you, but the invite said to leave phones in the car. But here's a photo of me in my cool Captain America 3D glasses:
(Sit down, stop jumping around, it's an awesome picture, I know. And the quality is amazing. It's not grainy or reddish... it's perfect.) (No, it's not.)
(And you can totally see the Captain America logo on the side of the glasses.) (No, you can't.)
Anyway, Captain America is pulling a strong 71% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes right now so GO SEE IT! IT'S FANTASTIC!

'Eye roll,' Gaga tweets after music mag NME blasts her latest LP.
By James Montgomery

<P>Earlier this week, British music mag <a href="http://www.nme.com/blog/index.php?blog=1&title=the_most_pretentious _albums_ever&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1" target="_blank"><i>NME</i></a> set out to determine the "10 Most Pretentious Albums Ever." The list includes (genuinely pretty terrible) conceptual fare like Kiss' <i>Music From "The Elder,"</i> Lou Reed's <i>Metal Machine Music</i> and, uh, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a>'s <i>Born This Way,</i> which somehow bested all competitors to nab the #1 spot. How? Well, as <i>NME</i> writer Priya Elan wrote, "On <i>Born This Way,</i> [Gaga] seemed to believe in her own hype, convinced she had a message to share. Cue an album of unwieldy 'anthems' that couldn't mask the fact that the fun had left the building." Elan singled out the thumping "Scheiße" as <I>BTW</i>'s most pretentious moment, adding, "Did electroclash die for this?" Snap. As you'd probably expect, those jabs had Gaga's Little Monsters on the offensive, and they launched an all-out attack on Elan in the comments section of <i>NME</i>'s website. But Gaga herself remained above the fray — for a while, anyway. On Thursday night, she took to her <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/172828595134267392" target="_blank">Twitter account</a> to hit back at <i>NME,</i> a publication that's certainly been <a href="http://i28.tinypic.com/2vwzpfp.jpg" target="_blank">no stranger to charges of pretentiousness</a> over the years. "Oh the irony of winning 'Most Pretentious Album Ever' from none other than NME. *Eye roll,*" Gaga wrote. "I might laugh forever [and] then return to narcissism." Double snap. Having sufficiently eye-rolled her way through the situation, there's been no further comment from Gaga about the list. <I>NME,</i> of course, has since turned the exchange into <a href="http://www.nme.com/news/lady-gaga/62233" target="_blank">a separate story,</a> one which, for whatever reason (word count?), includes recent comments Gaga made about bulimia ... and spaghetti. *Eye roll.*</p>

<P>As promised, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/kesha_/artist.jhtml">Ke$ha</a> and her boys Lil Wayne, T.I., Wiz Khalifa and Andre 3000 dropped a new <a href="/news/articles/1672529/lil-wayne-kesha-ti-wiz-khalifa-remix.jhtml">remix of "Sleazy"</a> on Tuesday (December 13). </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="id:1661961" width="240" height="211"></div><p> The Bangladesh-produced song originally appeared on K-Dollar's 2010 <a href="/news/articles/1651081/keha-gets-sleazy-on-new-cannibal-track.jhtml"><i>Cannibal</i> album</a> before a <a href="/news/articles/1656039/andre-3000-pops-up-on-kehas-sleazy-remix.jhtml">remix featuring Andre</a> popped up earlier this year. The latest version of the song is available for purchase and is all over blogs like <a href="http://www.rap-up.com/2011/12/12/new-music-kesha-f-wiz-khalifa-andre-3000-ti-lil-wayne-sleazy-remix/" target="_blank">Rap-Up.com</a>. The song gets a bit dirtier and introspective thanks to verses from the guys that play up the track's bumping beat. Wiz kicks it off, rapping about designer clothes and his lady love, Amber Rose. "OK, I'm young and I'm tatted/ I get them bucks like an addict/ Rocking this Christian Dior/ I spend so much on my fabric/ I got a wifey at home/ And what she wants she can have it," he spits before going on about chilling on the beach, being rich and his prowess in the bedroom. Sitting in between Wiz and Tip is Andre's recycled verse, before T.I. gets his shot and gets sexy, asking Ke$ha, "Do you know what to do with me?" before he launches into a verse all about how good he is to the ladies. "Bad bitches know me/ So don't bother introducing me/ They want me more than diamonds," he brags before explaining that it has a lot to do with his impressive anatomy. Wayne closes it out, adding his own signature flair. "We be on that sh-- that no one be on/ That's what we on/ Smoke that neon, Kings of Leon/ Dynamite, Napoleon/ Got some skinnies and a tee on/ And some Vans," he rhymes about his famous sense of Weezy-fied style before the song circles back to the funky chorus, where Ke$ha declares that she doesn't "need you or your brand-new Benz/ Or your bougie friends/ I don't need love lookin' like diamonds/ Lookin' like diamonds." If any of K's fans or critics were wondering if she has the swagger to chill with the guys, she displayed some of her sass when she <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/KESHASUXX" target="_blank">tweeted</a> about the remix. "Question ANIMALS ... who can say they got with Lil Wayne, T.I., Andre 3000 and Wiz Khalifa on a f---ing hot track??" she asked. "ill give u one clue ... Its $." <i>What do you think of the "Sleazy" remix? Tell us in the comments!</i></p>

Every day is 'Take Your Daughters To Work Day' if you're Sarah Jessica Parker. On Monday (February 27) the actress had the help of a nanny when getting 2-year-old twins Tabitha and Loretta (ponytail) into her car for a trip to her office in New York City.
Mom and her two girls had on matching grey coats. Maybe they were all dressed for a business meeting?

Former wild child Nicole Richie has traded in late nights for early mornings. The mom-of-two says she rises at the crack of dawn each day just so she can have a little bit of alone time.
“I wake up at 5:30 in the morning, every morning, so I can be alone,” admits the Fashion Star mentor, who graces the cover of the April issue of Flare magazine. “I don’t have anywhere to be, but mentally, I like to go downstairs and drink my coffee … I’m telling you, it changes my entire day.”
